Deadline For Bank Accounts Without BVN Elapses Today

THE deadline for customers of Microfinance Banks (MfBs) and Other Financial Institutions (OFIs) without Bank Verification Number (BVN) linked to their accounts has elapsed today, January 1,2018.
If the directive by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) earlier in the year is anything to go by, such customers will be unable to make withdrawals from their accounts henceforth.
The BVN enrolment is a brainchild of the apex bank and the Bankers’ Committee, a body of banks’ managing directors and the CBN.
This is coming as the initial deadline set for July 31, this year was extended. The new directive indicated that by December 31, 2017, all customers of financial institutions operating in the country are expected to have had their BVN.
The CBN, again, assured Nigerians that the BVN is geared towards financial system stability, while ensuring Deposit Money Banks (DMBs) customers are identified and known, so as to prevent those that will use the banking system as a platform to carryout illegal activities.
The CBN had in November written a letter to the Deposit Money Banks in the country, asking them to submit list of customers and bank accounts without bank verification number.
The letter came after a Federal High Court in Abuja ordered the CBN and 19 banks to freeze accounts without the BVN and got an interim order seeking the forfeiture of deposits in the accounts without theBVN, among others.
Government has said that there were about 45 million accounts in the banking sector withoutBVN as at February this year. According to the Nigerian Interbank Settlement System (NIBSS), there were 97.57 million accounts in the banking system as at February, 2017, with only 51.72 million of them having BVN. The BVN was introduced in 2014 to ensure that all bank accounts have biometric identification of their owners.
There is raging debate on the legality or otherwise of the planned forfeiture of funds in such accounts without BVN.

Family Cheats Death After Their Car Fell Into A Ditch While Dodging Pothole (pics)

This family experienced a ghastly motor accident while traveling back from Christmas celebration from the eastern part of the country. 
According to reports, the accident occurred along Ore road after the driver tried to dodge a pothole as the front tyre got busted.
The car veered off the highway and landed in a ditch with all the occupants coming out with any injuries.

University Of Ilorin (UNILORIN)Wins West African Debate Championship Held In Ghana

University of Ilorin, UNILORIN debate team wins the first west African debate championship in 2018 at Ghana.
The Student Union commends the University of Ilorin team who just emerged champions of the maiden Genesis Debate tournament, which is an International Open tournament seeing undergraduate and postgraduate participants from Nigeria, Ghana & Mauritius, held from the 4th till 7th of January in Accra, Ghana.
The Final round of the championship held on Sunday, 7th of January at the University of
Ghana, was contested by the following teams:
In Opening government- Jessica Amoor (University of Ghana) & Esinam Osei-Bonsu (Kwame Nkrumah University of science and Technology)
In Opening Opposition- Faithfulness Okom (University of Calabar) & Derrick Ackah (Ghana Law school, Mokola)
In Closing Government- Richard Adu-Poku (Africa Leadership University, Mauritius) & Omotayo Jimoh (UNILORIN)
In Closing Opposition- Hawau Abikan & David Ejim (both of UNILORIN,)
With the University of Ilorin emerging champions.
The debate team was also awarded 3 of the top 10 speakers medals, the best female debater award, the Second best judge medal (won by Abolarin Mohammed) and one of our students, Adekunbi Ademola, served as the Co-Chief Adjudicator of the competition.

After 8 Years, China Completes World’s Longest Sea Bridge

China says it has completed the major work of the world’s longest sea bridge on after its lighting system was installed and tested.
It took six years preparation, and eight years to build the 55-kilometre-long bridge linking Hong Kong, Zhuhai and Macao.
Major work on the bridge consisted of a 22.9-kilometre-long main bridge, a 6.7-kilometre-long tunnel and an artificial island off the bridge, which is considered the most technically demanding part of the whole construction.
In the next few weeks, engineers and constructors will test the coordination of the bridge’s various systems and equipment, and proceed with inspection and cleaning work, said Zhang Jinwen, project director with the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB) Authority.
“The bridge will be put into trial operation after its port project is completed and taken over by customs, inspection and quarantine, and border control authorities,” Zhang said.
In the past 14 years, the regional economy and transport network have undergone tremendous changes, leading authorities to re-assess the utilization rate of the bridge, said Su Yi, assistant to the chief of the HZMB Authority.
But Su dismissed worries that the bridge would not have enough traffic, saying, “we have full confidence for the future”.
“We have a whole toolbox of policies at our disposal,” Su said. “It is like playing cards. We can adjust our moves accordingly.”
The bridge will slash travel time between Hong Kong and Zhuhai from three hours to just 30 minutes, further integrating cities in the Pearl River Delta.
